Nature in the City’s nursery is hosting a work party to propagate plants that will be grown out and planted in the Green Hairstreak Corridor. We’ll learn as we go while we assist in transplanting, pruning, weeding, seed sowing, and general upkeep of the nursery at the White Crane Springs Community Garden.
Nature in the City started the Backyard Nursery Network to preserve native plants like coast buckwheat, seaside daisy, and deer weed, as they provide habitat for local creatures. Growing these plants from resilient native seed genetics ensures the survival of both the endangered plants and our local butterflies, bees, birds, and other wildlife.
Most of these plants are going to the Green Hairstreak Corridor planting projects in the Inner Sunset.
The workday tasks vary from month to month, but be ready to get your hands dirty!
Parking is available on Locksley Ave. *NOTE* there is no public restroom in the community garden.

We will each bring our own picnic lunch. If you prefer to pick up something on your way to the event, the closest store / deli is:

Amber, is this also the closest restroom? I noticed that there are none in the community garden but am sure folks will need one.
Just a few more blocks away, there are some excellent options in the Inner Sunset neighborhood. Here are a few:

1:30 pm - 3:00 pm (~ 1.5 hours)
Tour Portions of the Green Hairstreak Corridor with Amber Hasselbring
(Amber - which areas are we visiting?)
Route idea:
Start at 15th & Quintara Steps where there is ample parking > 14th & Pacheco > The base of Areial Steps > Rocky Outcrop > Cascade Walk Steps > 12th & Pacheco > Golden Gate Heights Park Triangle > 14th & Quintara > Quintara Steps
Map Pin: TBD
Parking: TBD
After lunch, we’ll walk along a portion of the Green Hairstreak corridor to see how the plants from the nursery look when they are planted out in a habitat. Some areas may include stairs, but there are opportunities to visit just part of the corridor or take a shorter walk if preferred.
Could we add more specifics?

FAQs - Green Hairstreak Butterfly Adventure
How is this trip organized?
This is meant to be very casual, so you can sign up for the parts of the adventure that best align with your interests and schedule. Everyone manages their own transportation, brings their own picnic etc.
What should I bring?
Plan to bring your own picnic with beverages and/or a reusable water bottle. You may be most comfortable if you dress in layers, as temperatures can vary, and wear practical, closed-toed shoes. And don’t forget the sunscreen, which is necessary even in winter. Finally, as mentioned earlier, you’ll need to fill out this waiver form in order to participate: Nature in the City Engagement Form
